Room 13's Poetry

                                    Poetry – Our Learning Journey

Room 13 has had an inquiry focus on Planet Earth and Beyond. Through our own individual areas of interest, we have been learning about the sun, space, volcanoes, storms, water cycle and more.  We have had a number of provocations including science experiments like: making rain, sundials, evaporation etc

Also we have looked at a variety poetry based around our chosen inquiries. To help provoke thought we have also used a variety of visual images to help extend our ideas and language.

After reading and exploring many types of poems we started to develop our own ideas on what makes good poetry, why we like poetry and what we find difficult about poetry. Here are some of our ideas-

Characteristics of good poetry as identified by Room 13

-Imaginative and creative
-Descriptive with language that appeals to the senses
-Provokes thought
-Makes you laugh, feel happy or sad
-Uses figurative language  (personification, similes, metaphors)
-Creates images in the reader’s mind
-Sometimes rhymes

Room 13 likes writing poetry because …

-we feel there are no limitations
-we can be creative
-we feel it is close to creating music and music is cool
-we can be original
-we don't need to use full sentences

What Room 13 finds difficult?

-We sometimes struggle with word choices
-It can be hard to make it rhyme
-Trying to be original
-Sometimes our spelling can be a barrier

-We don’t always have a repertoire of words

Brainstorming the 'language'.

Identifying the language features.

Here we are sharing and illustrating our poems with Room 3.
.

HERE ARE A FEW OF OUR POEMS!!!

LANDSCAPE

Awesome grey shiny rocks
Water flowing like blood in veins
Animals wild and free
Kea flying in the sky
Endless beauty
A picture

By Lachlan

Awakening

The charming air of freedom
Water making waves
Snowy hills so white
Bright sun above
Clean fresh air
Stars sparkling in sight
What a beautiful night

         By Chelden

Awakening

I feel the cold wind blowing
Freezing water pushing me
See the light blue sky
Moving with the clouds
Observing great big grey rocks
Green grass hiding
Feel the warming of the sun
Stars shining in the dark sky
Paradise

By Moa

New Zealand Landscapes

I saw the stars brighten
Felt the pinnacles of rocks reach out
Clouds plated over the moonlight
Portraying cats about to leap
Thunder whispering like old men
The ground shivered and shook
Like frightened animals,
Fireworks stopped, as no birds flew
Moon was the red eye of an angry dragon
Earth seemed to crack the universe in two
Mountains were bumpy seashells
Lake made out of freezing ice
It was calling me to swim
To paradise valley

By Honey

 NZ Landscapes

Luscious green canopies of forest,
Broken by grey balding peaks,
Topped with a toupee of white
Rivers rushing forward
Like a flock of sheep
Seeking the power of Tangaroa
Stars spying on me
I lied on the  green grass wondering...
How long the beauty would last?
Would Tanemahuta be happy or sad?
Will my generation appreciate this beauty
Or is it doomed!

By Tayne

Night Sky

I look up in the night
I see the stars shining bright
Many of them, light years away
Splashes of sparkling white
Painter's pallet, what a sight
Masterpiece looking down
A snapshot to remember

By Adi

Lightning

Flash, bang, boom!
Lightning strike
Amazing sight
Such a fright
Horror night
Interesting thoughts
Nervous feelings
Gymnastics in the sky

By Riley

Space

Thunderstorms of stars
Burning up and sucking life
Moody flashes, explosive power
Milky Way swirling round
Trying to escape its place
Whispers travel over time
One of those will be mine

By Caleb, Honey, Emily, Riley

Awakening

See the stars sparkling in the darkness
Feel the sun shining on my heart
Taste the water from the driving rain
Icy cold snow burns my face
Trees are dancing shadows
Shiny stones in the lake
Reflections passing by
Clouds form a whale’s tail
What a wonderful sight.

By Taila

Landscape

White fluffy mist rolling in
Over calm lakes, snowy peaks
And clear blue waters
Waterfalls flowing down
Like long white fingers
Mysteriously looking for love
Stars supervising and overseeing
The majestic scenery
Oh the beauty of Aotearoa

By Emily

Power

Looking at the sun
Angels flying around
Nature is beautiful
Diamonds in my head
Sun shining in my eyes
Catching shadows of light
Aiming at the clouds
Praying birds up high
Enjoying the sun
Stars in the sky
Night time

By Hemi

Scenery

Starts pined into black
Mysterious sky
Whirls of wind
Wisps of cold
Valleys and snowy peaks
Courageous currents
Rushing to sea
Clouds gliding
Like sea foam
Birds flying free
Trusting nature
Cradled by mother earth

By Brayden

Lucky

I saw the steam rising from the river rocks due to the hot sun
I examined the river talking as it bubbled like a spar
I felt the icy cold wind blow on my face as though it was angry
Looking at the beauty of New Zealand, I wondered.....
Have we cared for this precious jewel of ours?
Will it survive?

By Caleb

The Eye Of A Tornado

Howling sound of sirens
Like a pack of wolves
Destroying lives one by one
Crushing houses like tooth picks
Creating a trail of devastation
People desperate to save their lives
Life seems so cheap

By Tayne

My dream

See the mountains
Hot sun shining
Hear the  wind in my face
Cloud surround me
Feeling free and at peace
Drifting to sleep
Alarm screams
Just a dream

By Caiya

Glacier

Creeping moaning and groaning
Slowly moving forward
Like a giant wave
Appearing from the mountain side
Surrounded by trees and rocks
River rushing from the ice
Spewing from beneath
Power and the beauty
As it grinds everything beneath it

BY EMILY

Storm

Captivating blue sky
Moving slowly like a snake
Starting to fade like a person dying
Calm seas turn into an evil menace
Skies turn as dark as night
Reacting like a volcanic eruption
Clouds roar like an alpha lion
Formidable wind brushes up sails
Like a twister it moves.

By Honey

Amazing sky

I look up in the night
See the lighting dancing
Across the sky it moves
Howling wind echos
Playing hide ‘n’ seek
Clouds they hide
Lightning seeks
Stars dancing
Supervised by,
the moonlight

By Adi

Storm

Storm approaching
Sky turning grey
Raff of wind
Blowing our way
Darker by the minute
Crack, bang !
Flash of light
Storm is here

By Skye

Day Time

My eyes  open wide
Glaring water rushing by
Sun passes over
Deep blue sky
Reflections in the lake
Lush green grass
Picture perfect day

By Eti

Space

Stars shooting through the sky
Like lazars passing by
What are the reasons I "Ask why?"
Amazing sight to behold
As we all grow old
Time moves on by

By Riley

Space Poem

Look up into the sky
Milky Way up high
Sparkling stars everywhere
Lighting my way
Like a path
Fairytale in my head
Is it real?
Am I on the moon?
Is this a dream?

By Summer

One Planet

Frosty, mild wind
Tick, toc, tick, toc
Cherry blossoms in my face
Tick, toc, tick, toc
Nature's power surrounds
Tick, toc, tick, toc
Beauty everywhere
Tick, toc, tick, toc
How long will it last?
Tic, toc, tick, toc
Where will it go?
Tic, toc, tick, toc

By Summer

Storms

Surging skies
Black and purple
Rain drops tumbling
Colliding with ground
Splashing all around
Puddles forming
Joining together as one
Power flowing
Moving to waterways
What a journey

By Lara

Power in the Sky

Flash, crash, bang!
Across the sky I travel
Electric power down my arms
Sharing out my strength
Where will I land?
No one knows
Watch out!
Or you will lose your toes
No one wins
I am the champion
Of the sky

By Indiana

Rocky Night

Rushing waves, stormy night
Stars aren't out, what a sight
Earths rocking for revenge
Colours sweet but don’t blend
Fire lights big, but not in sight
Screeching words won’t be heard
Lost in the depth of space
Where am I now?
Gone without a trace

By Summer

Dark night

Dance beneath the stars
As you drink in the night
Thunder over takes you
As lightning fills the sky
Feel the force of nature
Penetrate your skin
Spin with the world
As magic sparkles sinks in
Always dreading the bad
Living for today

    By Honey

Weather

Rain is wet
Sun is warm
Thunder crashes
In a storm
Winters snow
Cold and white
Shining sun
What a sight!

By Honey

This is Honey's poem inspired by ANZAC Day.

DEATH

I watch my mum and see her cry
I already know but still ask why?
Her heart is hurting, yet she tries to smile
We hold each other for a while

By Honey

  1. Wow wow wow Room 13! I have been lucky enough to have Tayne share a poem with me, but I did not realise you had a class full of poets! Room 3 have been working on using more descriptive language and making better word choices. Perhaps some Room 13 friends could come and share their poems with us one day? Tino pai rawa!
